New tennis training director at club

Ville Liukko, who was captain of Finland's Davis Cup team from 1998-2001, is the new director of the Tournament Training Program at the Westboro Tennis and Swim Club. Liukko, 32, a former top-ranked pro in Finland who was ranked as high as 117th internationally, began his new job in mid-September. The training program encompasses players ages 10 to 18 and is held twice weekly in two age divisions. Liukko is the latest of several pros who have joined the Westborough club tennis staff from overseas.

''Ville's credentials are exceptional," said the club's president and general manager, Justin Lundberg. ''He's been invited to play next summer for the Boston Lobsters. He knows some of their players and their coach."

Liukko is living in Westborough with his wife, Johanna, 6-month-old son Eemeli, and 5-year-old daughter, Ella.

''He's definitely taught our juniors everything from strategy to shot selection, and it's nothing new for him," said the club tennis coordinator, Stephen Ferris. ''He insists on fitness and a strong work ethic, and he definitely conveys his love of tennis. He couldn't wait to get onto the court here."
